In Conversation with Clemens Schrettl

Head of Sales and Marketing at Spairliners

With his broad international experience and focus on partnerships, Clemens brings both perspective and drive to his role at Spairliners. His views reflect not only where the MRO industry stands today, but also how adaptability, trust, and curiosity will continue to shape its future.
We recently sat down with Clemens to talk about his journey, the evolving MRO landscape, and what motivates him. Below, he shares 11 key takeaways from our conversation.

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=""][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]

The MRO Sales Landscape Today

1. MRO sales has changed significantly, it’s more complex and more demanding than ever.

MRO sales has evolved significantly, becoming more sophisticated and value‑driven. Digitalisation, sustainability goals, and regulatory standards now guide customer decision‑making. Success today comes from delivering smart, future‑ready solutions rather than standalone services.

2. Customers value insight alongside availability.

Airlines are increasingly looking for transparency, data-driven recommendations, and partners who help them make better long-term decisions.

3. Supply chain challenges have raised expectations on all sides.

Uncertain parts availability has made proactive planning essential. Strong networks, flexibility, and early communication are in today's MRO landscape critical differentiators in sales.

4. Data helps turn a supplier relationship into a true partnership.

When insights support forecasting and planning, conversations naturally shift from individual transactions to long-term collaboration.

5. Flexible service models help airlines stay operational in uncertain times.

Pooling concepts and adaptable solutions give airlines more operational stability and help them manage fleets more efficiently and sustainably.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=""]

Customer Loyalty and Long-Term Partnerships

6. Trust is built when partners perform during critical moments.

Reliability when it matters most is what customers remember and what defines lasting relationships in the MRO business.

7. True customer retention goes beyond contracts.

When customers feel understood and supported as part of their operations, loyalty becomes a natural outcome rather than a commercial goal.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=""]

Inspiration and Motivation

8. International experience has shaped Clemens' approach to sales.

Working across regions like Africa and the Middle East teaches you to listen, adapt, and build genuine relationships, especially in culturally diverse environments.

9. In places like the Middle East, personal connections are key.

Sales is deeply relationship-driven, and understanding cultures and expectations empowers creating trust and meaningful collaboration.

10. Aviation continues to inspire Clemens because it connects people worldwide.

It’s more than an industry. It enables exchange, movement, and cooperation across borders, which makes the work deeply motivating.

11. Balance outside of work helps performing better professionally.

Travel, sport, and new environments provide perspective, energy, and resilience. All of which feed back into how I lead and work.

Clemens Schrettl began his aviation career at Lufthansa Technik in 2007 and has since then built an international career across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Over the years, he has worked in airline and VIP sales, managed key customer relationships, and held leadership roles including Branch Manager in Dubai. A Global Movement for Change

A Local Cleanup with Visible Impact

Earth Day 2026 was guided by the global theme #Our Power, Our Planet, introduced by EARTHDAY.ORG. The theme highlights a central idea: meaningful environmental progress is driven by collective action — from global initiatives down to local engagement.

Celebrated across Earth Week (April 18–22), this year’s Earth Day once again emphasized hands-on participation, with community cleanups playing a key role worldwide.

Small Action, Big Local Impact

On Saturday, April 18, we took part in this global movement by organizing a self-initiated cleanup session around our office buildings.

Colleagues came together to remove litter and improve our immediate surroundings. The initiative created a tangible, visible impact while strengthening our shared sense of responsibility for the environment.

What made this initiative meaningful was not only the result, but the collective effort behind it. By working together, we demonstrated how small, local actions can reflect and support a much larger global purpose.

Why Local Action Matters

Earth Day serves as a reminder that environmental responsibility is not limited to large-scale policies. It is equally shaped by individual and community-driven efforts.

Community cleanups are a powerful example of this:

  • They improve local ecosystems and shared spaces
  • They raise awareness of waste and sustainability challenges
  • They encourage long-term behavioral change

By participating in this year’s Earth Day, we joined millions of people worldwide working toward a more sustainable future — reinforcing the message that collective action drives impact.

Looking Ahead

Our cleanup initiative is one step in an ongoing journey. Building on this experience, we remain committed to integrating sustainable practices into our daily work and supporting initiatives that benefit both our local community and the environment.

Earth Day 2026 reminds us that change is not abstract, it is created through consistent action.
Because ultimately, our power lies in what we do together.

In Conversation with Meike Luikenga

Head of Strategic Accounts & Client Services at Spairliners

We sat down with Meike Luikenga, Head of Strategic Accounts and Client Services at Spairliners, to talk about her journey in aviation, her leadership philosophy, and her vision for building strong partnerships in the aviation MRO environment.
In this conversation, she shares what shaped her professional path, how she approaches responsibility across two closely connected teams, and why clarity, structure, and personal exchange remain central to sustainable collaboration in a complex industry.
From our exchange, we have gathered the most compelling insights and key takeaways to give you a concise perspective on her approach, her priorities, and the direction she is setting for Strategic Accounts and Client Services at Spairliners.

Building Strategic Partnerships in Aviation MRO

Experience That Connects Commercial and Operational Realities

When Meike Luikenga joined Spairliners as Head of Strategic Accounts and Client Services, she brought more than fifteen years of experience across consulting, account management, and program leadership within the aviation industry.
Her career evolved from mid-level commercial responsibility into senior leadership roles spanning international customer management and complex program environments. Along the way, she leveraged experience from both commercial and operational contexts, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how strategy, production realities, and customer expectations intersect.
This combination defines her approach today: structured leadership across Strategic Accounts and Client Services, grounded in operational awareness and a clear mandate to connect commercial alignment with execution at scale.

Beyond Contracts: Building Partnership Through Clarity and Accountability

Strategic Accounts and Client Services at Spairliners work in close alignment while maintaining distinct responsibilities. Together, they form the interface between airline priorities and internal delivery structures.
While Strategic Accounts ensures commercial clarity, long-term alignment, and governance, Client Services translates these commitments into daily coordination, operational transparency, and disciplined follow-through.
For Meike, partnership in aviation MRO is built on predictability, mutual trust, and measurable reliability. It requires early alignment of expectations, continuous dialogue, and the ability to navigate complexity without losing structural clarity.
The ambition is to create stable, long-term partnerships that combine commercial robustness with operational precision.

Driving Clarity Through Structured Communication

Looking ahead, Meike’s focus lies in deepening client dialogue and further developing structured governance across teams and interfaces.
Personal exchange remains essential. Wherever possible, communication is structured digitally to ensure efficiency and sustainability. At the same time, targeted face-to-face interaction continues to play a role when it strengthens trust and enables deeper understanding. Ultimately, effective communication — transparent, regular, and structured — is the foundation.
At an internal level, the emphasis lies on sharpening processes, clarifying responsibilities, and enhancing performance visibility through structured KPI monitoring. Digital tools support this transparency and enable faster identification of deviations and improvement potential.

Leading Through Complexity

Aviation MRO operates under constant pressure: tight timelines, technical interdependencies, regulatory frameworks, and high expectations for fleet reliability.
For Meike, leading in this environment means more than coordination. It requires structured decision-making, clear prioritisation, and the discipline to keep all stakeholders aligned even when circumstances shift.
She sees complexity not as a constraint, but as a leadership responsibility. She turns strategic direction into realistic execution, ensuring commitments remain deliverable and providing customers with stability in situations that are often inherently dynamic.
In her view, long-term partnership is built by reducing uncertainty through structure and reinforcing confidence through consistent, accountable performance.

High Expectations, Strong Support

Meike believes strong teams are built on clarity, trust, and ownership. She encourages initiative, open communication, and continuous learning, while maintaining high standards for accountability and financial awareness.
In her words, people perform best when expectations are transparent and responsibility is clearly defined. Leadership, therefore, means enabling autonomy within a stable framework and supporting growth without compromising discipline.
Her ambition is to strengthen a department that combines governance with proximity, structure with flexibility, and performance with human connection.

Passion Beyond the Profession

Outside of work, aviation remains a passion. She enjoys traveling and flying, and finds balance through sports and activities around the water. Music plays an important role as well: she performed for several years in a 70-member orchestra as a clarinet player.
Her son is a constant source of perspective and inspiration. He reminds her to look at situations from different angles and to keep curiosity alive — a mindset she carries into her professional life as well.
And when asked which item she could not get through her workday without, her answer was immediate and practical: her mobile phone.

Thank you, Meike, for the open and insightful conversation.

Meet Spark:
Our Rubber Duck’s Name, Chosen by Our Community

From a playful idea to a shared moment, how one small duck brought our community together.

What started as a light-hearted internal idea quickly turned into something bigger. Over the past weeks, our Rubber Duck became a familiar presence across Spairliners channels. With your help, the duck now has a name. A name that will stay with us and accompany Spairliners.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]

The Story Behind the Duck

The campaign was designed to be simple, open, and inclusive. Colleagues and the community were invited to submit name ideas. We received creative suggestions, thoughtful explanations, and a strong sense of shared ownership. It showed how much engagement can grow from a small, playful activation.

From Participation to Decision

After reviewing all submissions, the final step was clear: the community would decide.

Through a public poll, the most fitting name was selected, reflecting clarity, approachability, and a subtle nod to what Spairliners stands for.
The chosen name now officially belongs to our Rubber Duck and will be used across events, communications, and selected brand touchpoints.

Thank You for Taking Part

This activation thrived on participation and that is where its real value lies. A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed ideas, voted, commented, and followed along. Your involvement turned a simple concept into a shared experience and added a personal layer to our brand story. The duck may be small, but the response was anything but.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=""][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]

Spark will continue to appear at selected moments where we bring our culture and community to life. Stay tuned.

Spairliners at MRO Europe 2025

When a Pink Duck Stole the Show in London

Connections, Celebrations, and a Step Toward a Greener Future

A playful highlight at MRO Europe 2025 in London drew plenty of smiles: our 20 Years Anniversary Pink Duck made a cheeky guerrilla-style appearance atop the MRO Europe sign! Visitors enjoyed the moment — taking photos, sharing the fun, and picking up their own Spairliners duck as a keepsake. A light-hearted touch that reflected our team spirit and creativity.

Beyond the duck buzz, MRO Europe was once again an incredible opportunity to reconnect with partners, meet clients in person, and form new relationships across the aviation community. We kicked off the week with a fantastic warm-up event at Bokan Bar, co-hosted with our partners Lokad and Total Aviation — the perfect start to a few inspiring days full of ideas, laughter, and collaboration.

This year also marked an important milestone for Spairliners: the European debut of our reusable stand concept. Already successfully used in the U.S., this innovative and modular design combines flexibility, style, and sustainability. Our efforts were proudly recognized with the GOLD category in Aviation Week’s BETTER STANDS initiative, highlighting our ongoing commitment to smarter, more responsible exhibition design.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us — whether to chat, collaborate, or take a duck selfie! MRO Europe 2025 was truly one to remember. More creative moments, strong partnerships, and sustainable solutions are already on the horizon — and we can’t wait.

Check out our event impressions on LinkedIn and get ready for what’s next—we’re just getting started.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

20 Years, Fresh Vibes: Spairliners Gives Hamburg HQ a Makeover

What better way to celebrate 20 years of Spairliners than with a fresh new vibe?

Our Hamburg headquarters has been getting its own celebration — a thoughtful makeover that blends creativity, comfort, and a touch of aviation pride.

Visitors are now greeted by a bold wall decal in our entry area, setting the tone for who we are from the very first step inside. Throughout the corridors, custom aircraft silhouettes — A380, E-Jet 170/175, E-Jet 190/195 — proudly showcase the fleet at the heart of our expertise. It’s more than decoration; it’s a daily reminder of the complexity we manage and the passion we share across teams.

We’ve also reimagined our Dining Hall with brand-new chalkboard walls, creating a space where ideas flow as freely as conversations. This is more than just a lunch spot — it’s a hub for cross-department connections, spontaneous sketches, and even a few competitive foosball matches.

And sometimes, the smallest touches bring the biggest lift. Our Sales Office now features a giant, lush plant — a mission made memorable when our Head of Sales & Marketing, Clemens Schrettl, managed to transport it in what might be the smallest car imaginable. Now, it brings fresh energy to the space, perfectly complementing our reimagined office.

From cozy corners for a quick pause to aviation details that speak to our identity, every change reflects our belief that a great workspace fuels great teamwork.

Here’s to the next 20 years of growth, collaboration, and excellence — in the skies and right here at home in Hamburg.

📸 Take a look at the gallery below to see our refreshed workspace come to life.
